What We Offer 

Department of Sound’s programs provides distance learning-ready educational support and programming for in-school and after-school administrators. 

We strive to impact as many students as possible by providing educational institutions and teachers with the tools necessary to deliver engaging and high-quality music and arts experiences.

Our program specializes in music and podcasting production for 5th -12th-grade students. Tailored for full virtual capabilities, our program teaches youth music and language arts learning through multidisciplinary methods.

The Course

We provide virtual music production and podcast curriculum of 10 weeks for 5th - 12th-grade students. 

Designed to address the current needs of all students during this time of instructional pivot, we use blended methods including virtual instruction, independent and collaborative work to teach and reinforce creativity, musical expression, composition, and performance to make connections, and give context to students personal and cultural experiences.

 
Upon completion of the course, students will know how to create:
  1. A full track with a structure form including intro, verse and chorus

  2. An interview style podcast with opening and closing music


The main goals of the course are: 
  1. Learn and demonstrate understanding of basic rhythmic loops

  2. Create original works using melodic and rhythmic concepts

  3. Students will be completing projects independently and in collaboration with peers

  4. Demonstrate understanding of use of technology as a medium to communicate and reinforce positive forms of expression

  5. Learn how to use music and technology to communicate their cultural values and practices


Student will learn the following during the 10-week course: 
  1. Soundtrap’s basic functions and tools for music production and podcasting 

  2. How to make tracks using keyboard, patterns and instrument tabs

  3. Understanding of tempo, composition basics, audio recording functions, and microphone use

  4. How to get comfortable with the piano function, the keyboard, and to expand their ability to create independent music

  5. How to create a podcast and record a full interview 

  6. Learn aspects of podcasting, including: equipment, voice recording, audio editing, interviewing, and journaling 

  7. Review exporting procedures for music and podcasts

  8. Introductory music business knowledge
